A freshman from Brooklyn has asserted his dominance in the national junior saber circuit with a commanding win in a massive field.
The Summer Nationals and July Challenge is never a quiet affair, but the Junior Men's Saber event this past July 1st drew an extraordinary crowd of 375 competitors. Among them, Nazir Primus, a freshman at the University of Notre Dame, stood tall to claim the top spot.
Primus, who hails from Brooklyn, NY, brings a deep reservoir of experience to his collegiate career. With 145 results over nine seasons, he is a seasoned hand on the strip. This latest victory marks his eighth career title, a testament to his consistent development since he first began competing in 2019.
His path to gold required navigating a gauntlet of opponents in a single-elimination format. In the final bout, he met William J. Lim, another formidable A26-rated fencer from Globus Fencing Academy. Primus ultimately triumphed, adding another gold to his collection that already includes multiple Y-14 and Y-12 national-level wins.
Currently holding a national ranking of No. 6 in the U20 age group and No. 29 in the senior category, Primus is establishing himself as a force to watch. His performance at the July Challenge reflects years of training at the Peter Westbrook Foundation.
With his transition to NCAA competition, the pressure only increases, yet Primus shows no signs of slowing down. For fencers and fans alike, he represents the next generation of American saber talent. His win on July 1st is just the latest chapter in a career that is clearly still on the rise.
